Freaks Out
Direction: Gabriele Mainetti
Plot. Rome, 1943: Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario live as brothers in Israel's circus. When Israel mysteriously disappears, perhaps on the run or perhaps captured by the Nazis, the four "freaks" are left alone in the occupied city. Someone, however, has his eye on them, with a plan that could change their destinies--and the course of History.
Goal, solutions, results. Freaks Out was the first film for which EDI was responsible for all visual effects. Because of the nature of the film and the extreme complexity of the scenes, the team changed over time to bring in the skills of very diverse figures. It was definitely a challenging and very exciting experience. The result is a very dynamic and visually rich film-a unique product in Italy.

Insetti
We tackled individually all the insects that were to appear in the film such as bees, scorpions, cockroaches and fireflies. Much of the work was devoted to making them all move as realistically as possible, and for this we started with creating the skeleton and then went on to study the anatomy of each individual insect. The most difficult part, but also the most challenging, was finding a technology that would allow us to "direct" these insects in the easiest and most effective way.

One challenge after another
The creation of the train scene was one of the most challenging. In fact, being composed of so many different frames, one of the first things our FX team had to do was a general blocking: to insert all the bees with their basic movements in each sceneto get a first general idea of how they would behave within the intended context. The next step was then to insert more and more behaviors based on the scenes to be made during the production phase.
