Plot. The film is about the sentimental and civil upbringing of a child, Arturo, who is born in Palermo on the same day that Vito Ciancimino, a ranking mobster, was elected mayor. It is a love story about Arturo's attempts to win the heart of his beloved Flora, a classmate he fell in love with in elementary school whom he sees as a princess. Arturo is a boy like many others in 1970s Italy but, unlike his northern peers, he is forced to deal with the infiltration and criminal actions of the Mafia in his town. Arturo's awareness grows year after year, but no one listens to him. Palermo has other things to think about.
